About

Shannon Jones

I grew up in Washington, DC and moved to Montgomery County to raise my family.  I became interested in the mental health field after volunteering at my daughter’s school and later working with students exhibiting severe behaviors in the school system. These were the students that society labeled "bad" but they were students reacting to the environments and stressors they encountered. They were not "bad"students but misunderstood. I began to invest my time and energy in helping them discover who they were and who they wanted to become. My yearning to help others be their best selves prompted me to go back to school to receive a degree in counseling. I received my master’s degree in counseling from The George Washington University.

Currently, I work part-time as a school counselor for MCPS working with children/adolescents exhibiting trauma, abuse, grief, anxiety, etc. In my private practice, I encounter a diverse group of clients ranging from children/adolescents, college students, single women, domestic abuse victims, athletes, and the African American community.

I would describe my energy as upbeat and positive. My goal is to make the counseling process less intimidating by providing an atmosphere that is inviting for those that are new to therapy or for those that are recommitting.  My hope for my clients is to help them understand their sense of purpose and recognize their true identity.

In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, being outdoors, teaching Hip Hop dance classes, writing, listening to old school music, and spending time with my family.

My Approach

Life can throw you curve-balls, but having the coping skills to manage life's unexpectancies can make a difference in the choices you make. When feeling depressed, anxious, or hopeless, processing your emotions with someone who is knowledgeable can help you reframe your thinking.

This is where I can assist you. I provide counseling to individuals coping with a range of concerns, both physical and mental. I have experience working with children, adolescents, families and adults in the following areas: depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, self-esteem, behavioral issues, and family issues.

In my counseling sessions, I take an eclectic approach. This approach allows me to adapt to your individual needs. I want you to feel heard and understood in a non-judgmental space. By using a "person centered" and "solution focused" approach, you are free to explore past and current experiences that may be disrupting normalcy in your life.

Together we can develop effective coping skills that will help you overcome your obstacles. We can develop goals specific to you and work towards achieving them. As we go through this journey together, you will gain more self-awareness and self-understanding into the person you want to become.
